Standard Mental Health First Aid
Who is it for?
Any adult interested in supporting others. This course can be tailored to workplaces or other settings.
What will I learn?
You will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
Participants receive a Mental Health First Aid manual and are eligible for accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider (valid for 3 years).
Mental Health First Aid has been endorsed as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for a number of professions.
This course covers:
How to recognise the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems
How to provide initial help
Where and how to get professional help
What sort of help has been shown by research to be effective
How to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Mental health problems covered in this course are:
Depression
Anxiety problems
Psychosis
Substance use problems
Mental health crisis situations covered in this course are:
Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called self-harm)
Panic attacks
Traumatic events
Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
Severe psychotic states
Aggressive behaviours
What is the format?
The Standard Mental Health First Aid course is delivered in person over 2 full days or over 4 sessions of 3 hours each.
We can also deliver Mental Health First Aid in the Community course online via a self-paced eLearning component (approx. 7 hours to complete) followed by an Instructor-led component using video conferencing (2 sessions of 2.5 hours each).
