teen Mental Health First Aid
who is it for?
The teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) course teaches groups of teenagers, particularly high school students, how to support their friends. There is a tMHFA course for students in years 7-9 and a tMHFA course for students in years 10-12.
The tMHFA course should only be taught to an entire cohort of young people who have access to adults who have completed the Youth Mental Health First Aid course or have equivalent skills.
What is covered?
Students learn about the Teen MHFA Action Plan, different types of mental health problems and mental health crisis situations in young people, and the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
It teaches students to recognise when a friend is experiencing major changes in their thinking, feeling and behaviour, and when these changes may indicate the presence of a mental health problem.

Anxiety and Depression
Eating Disorders
Alcohol and Other Drug Use Disorders
Psychosis
Mental health crisis situations covered in this course are:
Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
Non-Suicidal Self Injury (Deliberate Self-Harm)
Intoxication
Bullying and Abuse
What is the format?
