Mental Health First Aid for the Workplace

Who is it for?

This course teaches managers, supervisors and individuals how to assist a co-worker who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan. Course content is tailored to the workplace setting using case-studies, videos and resources tailored to their learning needs.

Participants receive a Mental Health First Aid manual and are eligible for accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider (valid for 3 years).

This course covers:

  • learn how to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health problems and crises in your employees and co-workers

  • understand risk factors and appropriate evidence-based treatments and supports

  • learn how to respond and offer appropriate support to employees and co-workers using the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan

Mental health problems covered in this course are:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety problems

  • Psychosis

  • Substance use problems

Mental health crisis situations covered in this course are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called self-harm)

  • Panic attacks

  • Traumatic events

  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use

  • Severe psychotic states

  • Aggressive behaviours

What is the format?

This course can be delivered in two formats:

  • Blended format comprised of an interactive self-paced eLearning component (duration approximately 7 hours) and a follow-on face-to-face training (duration 4 hours) that offers participants the opportunity to revise and consolidate skills in a group environment, and to address mental health problems in the workplace in more depth.

  • Blended Online format comprised of an interactive self-paced eLearning component (duration approximately 7 hours) and a follow-on instructor facilitated training via video conferencing (2 sessions of 2.5 hours each).

The 2 day face-to-face Standard Mental Health First Aid course can also be tailored to delivery in workplace settings.
